Wimblu launches its ninth volume under the theme of Language

October 18th, 2024

The new edition of our magazine observes the contours of language, traverses the rigid lines by which we have defined it, and acknowledges the consequences of naming, classifying, hierarchizing. But as the stories explore tongues and voices beyond the human, the definitions begin to soften and language is revealed as a living thread that weaves us into the world. The volume is a collection of stories that explore language connecting ecology, culture, and spirituality through multiple formats such as multimedia, short film, text, and photo essay.

“We believe it is necessary to talk about language in times when globalization, standardization and the prevalence of an anthropocentric language, condition our ability to recognize ourselves as part of the web of life, our role in the planetary crisis and the realities we imagine possible.” —Wimblu’s Editors.

On this occasion, the volume features the participation of 14 authors from different countries, including Argentina, Australia, Costa Rica, Colombia, the United States, Estonia, and the Netherlands. Among the authors are Colombian writer and ecologist Mariana Matija, as well as visual artist and filmmaker Sky Hopinka, , a member of the Ho-Chunk Nation. In addition, we will launch the online premiere of the short film Desert by the Argentinian filmmaker Francisco Provedo, and the short film After Betelgeuse by the Estonian filmmaker Len Murusalu

The celebration of Volume 9's Language release will take place in Medellínbeing the first time we present a Night of Living Storiesin Colombia. On this event we will read unpublished stories that are part of the new volume, and we will also have the participation of the Colombian writer and ecologist Mariana Matija, as a special guest.
